From Bingo cards to Annie Hall: unconventional wedding invitations from Hello Dahlia

August 20th, 2011 -

This business has paid a fee to be listed on Offbeat Bride because they feel their products and services are in-line with our philosophies and needs … and we agree. Here's more info about how advertising works on Offbeat Bride.

Get ready to say “hell yeah!” to our offbeat sponsor Hello Dahlia. Hello Dahlia’s designer Julie Chapman uses a combination of high quality imported papers, double satin ribbon, vintage materials, and unconventional supplies (like, birch, twine, twigs, fabric and rope) to bring you wedding invitations like you’ve never seen before.

In order to properly introduce you to Hello Dahlia, let’s take a gander at some of my favorite invitations available in the store right now!

Hello Dahlia is also featured in our Offbeat Vendors guide!

Let’s start with the peacock invite. But here’s my problem, I’m not sure which one I like best, the one pictured above with all the pretty colors and the gorgeous ribbon, or this minimalist peacock design. Oh too many good pretty peacock choices — best problem to have EVAR?

The solution: since Hello Dahlia’s work is 100% custom and Julie loves working with clients that are creative and want to collaborate, you could always say, “I love both of them! Can we use the teal and silver peacock design, but add the gorgeous bow like in this one” and voila! You’re very own perfect peacock (or whatever…) wedding invites.

How fantastic are these birch tree invitations? This invite is printed on recycled craft paper, with a real piece of birch veneer and the adorable proverbial cherry on top is your own custom wood burned initials in a heart tag. Guh, the cuteness!

Okay, I know that this looks like a birthday invitation, but it’s NOT! It’s totally the invitation to your circus-themed wedding. Or without the big top, it’s an invitation to your colorful, candy-tastic weddingapalooza. Basically Hello Dahlia creations are anything you want them to be on top of being gorgeous!

Finally, I love — no — I lurve these Annie Hall-inspired invitations. Seriously, what other invitation designer would get their inspiration from Annie freaking Hall!? Hello Dahlia, my friends, is awesome and would love the opportunity to work with you to make an invite that you absolutely “lurve.”

Want to base your custom Hello Dahlia wedding invite on your favorite Cure lyrics? Or come up with your own crazy carnival invite? Hello Dahlia is ready and willing to help you send your guests something unforgettable.

Pop-up lotus flower wedding invitations

July 13th, 2010 -

OBT member Stella hand made her wedding invitations and added this beautiful pop-up lotus detail which is freaking AWESOME!

Here it is in all its glory…

Pretty cool, right!? I've never thought of adding a pop-up element to wedding invites before so these just got me all excited. Stella was also kind enough to include a link to a template for the pop-up flower and a ton of other nifty pop-up templates for all sorts of occasions. (I wish we had used the pop-up shark for our invites now!)

Folk Art Wedding Invitations

June 6th, 2010 -

talking heads little creatures

Talking Heads Little Creatures is one of my favourite album covers of all time. Outsider artist and Baptist Reverend Howard Finster created the artwork for the album. ( Someday, I am going to make a pilgrimage to Paradise Gardens.)

I adore folk art. Which is why I adore the wedding invitations designed by Rifle Events.

The designer created the invitations below for her own Mexican-fiesta- garden- party wedding in Florida. Can you believe these have a matching cake?

Why not have an artist create a one of a kind folk art invitation for your wedding?

Totally legit comic book wedding invitations!

May 24th, 2010 -

We've showed you comic book inspired wedding invitations before, but check out OBT member Mrs. Rooster's total legit comic book wedding invitations!

The idea to do a comic book came from her fiance, Troy. He has been a collector of comics his whole life and they met while he was working in a comic shop! Carmen's favorite comic is Archie, so Troy modeled the look and story flow of their comic on Archie…

Troy drew the whole comic and did the paintings for the covers and Carmen works typesetting books, so she typeset the invitation as well as all the lettering for the covers and the text in the comic.

Click the pictures to see a bigger version.

The whole comic is filled with inside jokes (such as, the flamingo on the first page is the offical city bird of Madison, WI where they live) and is narrated by their pets: two bunnies and two hamsters.

"So far, the response to the book has been overwhelmingly positive. We were a bit worried about how people would react to such a non-traditional invitation, but I think the quality of the book, along with the sweetness of Troy's telling of our story, really won people over. The best thing about doing a comic like this is that we will have a meaningful keepsake of our romance to look back on when we are old. I love that Troy's story will forever be a grand love letter to me and when I am ninety I can look back and see, in lovely detail, how much we loved one another and how much we mean to each other."

They even included ads!

Of course there's more to this invitation, like six pages back and front in total, but we've just given you sneak peek to get the juices of inspiration flowing. If you'd like to take on this creative invite project, Carmen told me that they created these books using ComiXPress. They specialize in short print run comics and can print as little as one book for you if you wish.

And yes, their postage was expensive — they had to use rigid mailers to protect the books — but SO totally worth it! Don't ya think?
